Shoppers, joggers, swimmers and diners will all have a reason to visit the former G.C. Murphy Building in June once construction is complete on MarketSquare Place, a $40 million retail, loft and YMCA complex in the middle of Downtown Pittsburgh.
Washington County-based Millcraft Industries held a ceremonial, disco-theme groundbreaking Wednesday evening to showcase the gutted interior of what will eventually become 30,000 square feet of street-level retail and dining space on the edge of Market Square.
On the second floor, the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh will open a full-service, 44,000-square-foot workout facility that will have access to a 25-meter-long pool in the basement. The facility will replace the YMCA on the Boulevard of the Allies.
The Market Square development will have 46 loft apartments for rent, said Lucas Piatt, Millcraft's vice president of real estate.
