Developers ponder potential for Iron City brewery in Lawrenceville

While the yeasty scent begins to disperse as operations wind down for good, the soon-to-be former Iron City brewery already is generating buzz from the prospects of redeveloping the property.
“We’re going to look to this piece of property for future development,” said Iron City Brewing Co. President Tim Hickman, announcing plans for new uses of the brewery at a press conference last week. Production of the company’s beer is expected to move from Lawrenceville to Latrobe next month.
Despite a terrible economy, it’s not hard to find real estate developers and professionals who see the potential of redeveloping the brewery, with its red-brick 19th century charm, blocks-long span and a warehouse located next to a rail line.
“I think it’s a great redevelopment site,” said Rob Stephany, executive director of the Urban Redevelopment Authority. “The facility itself is just remarkable. I continue to think that there’s something really interesting about its position in the marketplace.”
