Appetite for apartments in Pittsburgh region spurs rising rental rates

Brian Mendelsohhn didn't plan to become the first developer to rent apartments in Lawrenceville for $2,000 per month when he redeveloped a long-neglected Butler Street storefront into new commercial space topped by two lofts.
Yet, he's successfully done just that, pushing a price envelop unseen in a neighborhood with blue collar roots.
The two units, which feature generous balconies, green amenities and plenty of open space, rented quickly. They both are under long-term lease, and Mendelsohhn has started a waiting list.
