Once the domain of bureaucrats, the former State Office Building, Downtown, soon will become a domicile for city dwellers.
During a briefing before the city planning commission, Washington County developer Millcraft Industries unveiled plans to convert the 16-story office building into a 218-unit apartment complex, to be called River Vue Apartments.
Millcraft expects to spend more than $40 million gutting the 52-year-old building's interior to make way for one- and two-bedroom apartments, efficiencies and two-story townhouses that will occupy the two top floors.
The developer hopes to begin construction this fall. The first residents could be moving in by the end of 2011, although all 218 units won't be completed until sometime in 2012.
