For now, much of downtown Pittsburgh is under construction.
There's the North Shore Connector project, the PNC office, hotel and retail high rise and the Piatt Place transformation of the Lazarus building into condos and shops - pricey and ambitious projects aimed at revitalizing downtown's long-decaying urban core of blight and vacant stores.
"Within the next two years this whole area will be completely remade. When you have $1 billion of investment in the pipeline within two blocks of where we're standing right now," Lucas Piatt said.

Downtown living is starting to bulge out of its Golden Triangle.
Two of the newest members of the growing urban residential community are in neighborhoods not previously considered Downtown -- the Strip District and the South Side.

Several condo projects are under way Downtown, including Piatt Place, a 65-unit redevelopment of the former Lazarus-Macy's department store.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - March 27, 2007

The developer of the $20 million Carlyle condominium project, Downtown, believes the Golden Triangle can absorb 2,000 new housing units without a problem.
At an event Monday marking the start of construction of units within the 21-story former Union National Bank building at Fourth Avenue and Wood Street, developer David Bishoff, president of the E.V. Bishoff Co., Columbus, said the city has the amenities to attract buyers Downtown.
"Cities such as Columbus, Philadelphia and Cincinnati, to mention a few, all have large Downtown residential populations, and Pittsburgh's downtown can offer more amenities than those cities," Bishoff said.
